Reverse Pull Headgear

Article by: Hodges Orthodontics, May 24, 2017

What is a reverse headgear? What is a facemask?

The reverse pull headgear is a very important part of your orthodontic treatment. A reverse pull headgear will help to move your upper jaw forward with growth, which is critical to do at a young age, thereby reducing or possibly eliminating the need for very involved jaw surgery later in life. This treatment is to be taken very seriously and followed precisely if an acceptable result is to be achieved.

REVERSE PULL HEADGEAR QUESTIONS:

My reverse headgear is irritating the corners of my mouth?

The headgear attaches to two hooks with elastics. These elastics can be attached straight to the headgear or can be criss-crossed. Criss-crossing the elastics will take pressure off of the corners of the mouth and reduce irritation. It will be tighter this way, but it’s not a problem.

Will the reverse pull headgear be sore? How long will it take to get used to it?

The teeth will feel sore or tender for the first few few days. Sleeping will be different at first until you get used to sleeping with the headgear on your face.

What if the expander for my headgear becomes loose?

If the bands or expander which the headgear attaches to becomes loose, then discontinue the reverse pull headgear and call our office.

How often do I need to wear the reverse pull headgear?

The more that you wear the headgear, the greater the effect. Because of its design, vision is not greatly impaired. Therefore, it can be worn during homework or during movie-watching or video games. It should also be worn to sleep – this is the most important time! Wear your headgear consistently everyday to get the proper orthodontic benefit. Try not to skip any days; this will cause additional soreness and less effective movement. Never play rough while your headgear is on.

My reverse pull headgear is irritating my chin? What can I do?

First be sure that the pads on the headgear are kept clean and dry. These pads are basically stickers that are attached, and if they become too dirty or worn, they can be replaced. You were provided one replacement set when you first received your headgear, but if you need more, let us know. Some patients have found that placing additional cushion between the chin and the headgear is helpful.

Tahini Chocolate Banana Soft Serve

Wood cutting board with a bowl of vegan Chocolate Tahini Banana Soft Serve

INGREDIENTS

SOFT SERVE

  • 2 cups ripe sliced frozen bananas
  • 2 Tbsp Tahini (sesame seed paste // or sub other nut/seed butter // plus more for serving)
  • 3 Tbsp cacao (or unsweetened cocoa) powder
  • 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup (or sub dates or other sweetener (i.e. stevia) to taste)
  • 1-2 ripe pitted dates
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add ripe, sliced, frozen bananas to a food processor or a high-speed blender and mix / blend until a creamy “soft serve” is formed, scraping down sides as needed – about 3-5 minutes.
  2. Add tahini (or other nut/seed butter), cacao powder, and maple syrup and blend to combine. Then taste and adjust flavors as needed, adding more tahini for nuttiness, cacao for intense chocolate flavor, or maple syrup (or pitted dates) for sweetness. At this time, you can also add vanilla extract or a pinch of sea salt for more flavor. Mix as needed to combine.
  3. Serve immediately or transfer to serving bowls and put in the freezer to thicken up. Serve as is or top with additional tahini or magic shell!
  4. Best when fresh. Leftovers will keep in the freezer up to 1 week. Let come back to soft serve consistency at room temperature before enjoying.
