Dealing with Your Braces During the Holidays

Megan-City Orthodontics 2012

City Orthodontics Oral Hygiene

Give it Time

When you first have your braces put on, it will take a few days for you to get used to wearing them. Your teeth may feel uncomfortable because of the pressure put on them by the braces. However, with time you will become used to having the braces on your teeth. If you feel soreness, pain medications such as Advil or Tylenol will ease the discomfort.

Watch What You Eat and Follow the Rules

We provide complete instructions to each new patient with braces as well as a comprehensive list of foods to steer clear of. You can avoid most emergency appointments to repair broken or damaged braces by following these instructions.

It is tempting during the holidays to eat sticky, hard foods such as hard candies, nuts, caramels, taffy, chewy chocolate bars and raw vegetables. You should abstain from eating these items because they can easily do damage to your brackets and wires. You do not want to spend time during the busy holiday season sitting in a dental chair so only enjoy soft foods which are safe to eat!

Brush & Floss Your Teeth Often

You will probably be attending parties and get-togethers during the holidays where food is served. You should make it a habit to brush your teeth at least four times each day – after each meal and before going to bed. We show each patient how to floss with braces using an orthodontic floss threader. Remember that food easily becomes trapped behind wires and brackets so take the necessary time to brush and floss thoroughly. It’s a good idea to carry a small kit with you when you know you will be away from home that holds your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss threader, dental wax and a small folding cup.

Call Us if Something Breaks or Loosens

If a wire or bracket should break or loosen, don’t panic. We can deal with many emergency situations over the phone. If something is causing you a great deal of discomfort, we can schedule an emergency appointment for you. If a broken wire is causing you pain, you can clip the wire to where it’s comfortable and then cover the end with orthodontic wax. You will then have to contact us as soon as possible because a broken wire must be dealt with quickly.

Stay Focused on the Future

Remember that the reason you got braces is to make your smile straight and beautiful! Your braces will come off before you know it and you’ll be showing off your new smile to everyone you meet. Today’s modern braces are much more attractive than braces used a few years ago. Now it is considered a common, fashionable way to get a winning appearance. Be proud and enjoy the new-found confidence your braces provide you!

Heart healthy Holiday Salad

Ingredients

  • 6 handfuls of leafy greens (I used 4 handfuls of lettuce and 2 handfuls of curly endives)

  • 1/2 pomegranate

  • 1 diced red apple

  • 2 chopped tangerines

  • 1/2 julienned red onion

  • 8 chopped walnuts

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds (60 g)

For the salad dressing:

  • 4 tbsp orange juice

  • 1 tbsp tamari or soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 4 tbsp nutritional yeast

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a large bowl.

  2. To make the salad dressing you just need to blend all the ingredients in a blender. You can also mix them in a bowl, using a knife, but I prefer to blend them.

  3. Serve the salad with the dressing. Add the dressing just before eating the salad or the leafy greens will go soggy.

Heart Healthy Fruit cake

Ingredients

1kg mixed dried fruit (use a mix of raisins, sultanas, currants, cherries, cranberries, prunes or figs)

Zest and juice of 1 orange

Zest and juice of 1 lemon

150ml prune/grape juice plus extra for feeding

250g coconut oil

200g light soft brown sugar

4 tbsp chia seeds

175g plain flour

100g ground almonds

½ tsp baking powder

2 tsp mixed spice

1 tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground cloves

100g flaked almonds

1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Put the dried fruit, zests and prune/grape juice, coconut oil and sugar into a large pan set over a medium heat. Give it a good mix, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 5 mins until the sugar has dissolved. Tip the mixture into a large bowl and leave to cool for 30 mins.

  2. Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Line a deep 20cm cake tin with a double layer of baking parchment, then wrap a double layer of newspaper around the outside, tying it with string to secure. Mix the chia seeds with 150ml water. Leave to sit for 5 mins until gel-like and thick.

  3. .Add the remaining ingredients to the fruit mixture, along with the chia seed mix, and stir well, making sure there are no pockets of flour. Tip into your prepared tin, level the top with a spoon and bake in the centre of the oven for 2 hrs.

  4. Remove the cake from the oven, poke holes in it with a skewer and spoon over 2 tbsp of prune/grape juice. Leave the cake to cool completely in the tin.

  5. To store, peel off the baking parchment, then wrap well in cling film. Feed the cake with 1-2 tbsp grape/prune juice every fortnight, until you ice it. Don’t feed the cake for the final week to give the surface a chance to dry before icing.
